Understanding the British Empire
What was the British Empire?
The British Empire was a collection of countries and territories that were controlled by Britain. During the Victorian period (1837-1901), the Empire expanded significantly. It included countries like India, Australia, and many parts of Africa.
Size and Population
At its peak, the British Empire was the largest empire the world has ever seen. It covered vast areas and had an estimated population of over 400 million people. This means that around one-quarter of the world’s population at the time lived under British rule.
Movement of People
Many people from Britain were encouraged to leave their homes and settle in places across the Empire. Between 1853 and 1913, about 13 million British citizens moved overseas. They went to find new opportunities and build better lives.
Immigration to Britain
At the same time, people from other parts of the world were coming to Britain. For instance, between 1870 and 1914, around 120,000 Russian and Polish Jews arrived in Britain to escape persecution. They often settled in places like London’s East End, Manchester, and Leeds.
People from the Empire, including those from India and Africa, also moved to Britain to live, work, and study. This created a diverse society, with various cultures and traditions playing a part in British life.
