The Rebellion of the Clans
In 1745, there was an important event in Scottish history known as the rebellion of the clans. This was an attempt to place a Stuart king back on the throne of Britain. At this time, George I’s son, George II, was the king.
Key Figures
- Charles Edward Stuart: Also known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, he was the grandson of James II. He wanted to regain the throne for the Stuarts.
- Clansmen: These were supporters from the Scottish Highlands who fought for Charles.
Events of the Rebellion
- Landing in Scotland: Charles Edward Stuart arrived in Scotland and gathered support from the clansmen.
- Initial Successes: In the beginning, Charles had some victories and built an army.
- Battle of Culloden: In 1746, his army faced George II’s army at this battle. Unfortunately for Charles and his supporters, they were defeated.
Aftermath of the Rebellion
- After the Battle of Culloden, the clans lost a lot of their power and influence.
- The chieftains, or clan leaders, who had the king’s favour became landlords.
- The clansmen became tenants, meaning they had to pay for the land they used.
Highland Clearances
A significant change began after the rebellion, known as the Highland Clearances. Here’s what happened:
- Many landlords destroyed small farms, called crofts, to make room for sheep and cattle.
- This led to many people being evicted, or forced to leave their homes, especially in the early 19th century.
As a result, many Scottish people chose to emigrate to North America during this time.
