What is the UK?

The United Kingdom, often called the UK, is a country made up of four main parts:

  • England
  • Scotland
  • Wales
  • Northern Ireland

Together, these countries form the UK. It’s important to note that the rest of the island of Ireland is an independent country called the Republic of Ireland.

Official Name

The full name of the UK is The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Here’s a breakdown of what this means:

  • Great Britain includes only England, Scotland, and Wales.
  • Northern Ireland is separate from Great Britain but is still part of the UK.

We sometimes use the terms Britain, Isles, or British to refer to everyone living in the UK.

Islands and Territories

There are a few islands associated with the UK that are not part of it:

  • Channel Islands: These include Jersey and Guernsey. They have their own governments and are called Crown dependencies.
  • Isle of Man: This island also has its own government and is a Crown dependency.

Additionally, the UK has some British overseas territories around the world, such as:

  • St Helena
  • Falkland Islands

These territories are connected to the UK but are not part of the UK itself.

Government

The UK is governed by a parliament that meets in Westminster, London. Each country within the UK has its own parliament or assembly:

  • Scotland has the Scottish Parliament.
  • Wales has the Senedd (Welsh Parliament).
  • Northern Ireland has the Northern Ireland Assembly.

These local governments have devolved powers in certain areas, like education and health, allowing them to make some of their own decisions.
